Uzbekistan is a relatively young Central Asian nation dating back from the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Situated between the southern Amu Darya and northern Syr-Darya rivers; two-thirds of its geography is deserts and semi-arid land. The rivers flow west from the Tien-Shan mountain range and converge at the Aral Sea. It is due to these long freshwater rivers that Uzbekistan is also the most populated ‘stan’ with 28 million people; equal to Kazakhstan with five times as much land, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan combined. Indeed, since 1000 B.C., big cities have been situated along these rivers, and as they were centrally located between Europe and China, the Middle East and India, the caravan trade made them wealthy.
