My first
stop in Moscow, after sharing a shot of chilled vodka with my Old Russian
friend over lunch, was the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. On the banks of the
Moskva River, just west of the Kremlin on a commanding perch, it is the tallest
in the Eastern Orthodox Church. A beautiful footbridge connects the
Neo-Byzantine cathedral, similar to the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, to
Balchug Island. In celebration of Napoleon’s retreat in 1812, and as a memorial
to the sacrifices of the Russian people, the original reportedly had a
two-floor gallery, with the interior embellished by the best Russian painters,
such as Ivan Kramskoi, Vasily Surikov, and Vasily Vereshchagin. Follow the link for more http://www.delightinhim.com/russian-orthodox-journal-entry-1-cathedral-of-christ-the-savior.html
