am enthralled with the journey of NASA's Phoenix Mars lander, which came to an
end on November 10. Landing on the northern plains of Mars, its goal was
to confirm the existence of water ice, that only a few years ago, had been
discovered in orbit by the Mars Odyssey spacecraft. Water is the essential
building block for life. If water can be found, then there may be discovered

is to (1) study the history of water in the Martian arctic and (2) search for
evidence of a habitable zone and assess the biological potential of the
